The Healthy Homes Standards came into effect one year ago today to set minimum standards for residential rental properties for heating, insulation, ventilation, moisture ingress, drainage, and draught stopping. In addition to requiring ceiling and underfloor insulation to be installed where reasonably practicable to do so, landlords were also required to sign a statement of their intent to comply with the Healthy Homes Standards.
Compliance with the Healthy Homes Standards comes into effect from 1 July 2021. From this date, rental properties must be compliant within 90 days of a new or a renewed tenancy and all private rental properties must be compliant with the Healthy Homes Standards by 1 July 2024.
When it came into effect, the Healthy Homes Standards also required that from 1 July 2020 all new and renewed tenancy agreements must include a compliance statement that provides information about how the property currently meets the Healthy Homes Standards.
Due to the Covid-19 lockdown which prevented landlords from being able to access their properties and allow tradespeople to carry out the inspections required to complete the compliance statement, the date has been extended to 1 December 2020.
Most of the properties that we manage already have compliance statements and a significant proportion of the properties are also fully compliant with the requirements of the Healthy Homes Standards as we believe that our tenants should live in warm, dry and comfortable homes.
